Psychedelic background, vivid colours but there is so much more to see in this painting. Based on the Tarot card of The Magician which represents manifestation, and traditionally shows the four symbols of the Tarot suits - cups, pentacles, swords and wands, which also represent the four elements - water, earth, air and fire. In this painting the elements are rendered as a glass of water for cups/water; the silver balls represent pentacles/coins/earth; the swords/air which symbolise knowledge and the intellect are represented by the book; and wands/fire by an Aboriginal firestick. Above his head is the symbol of infinity. This card is numbered one, the number of new beginnings and opportunities. Posed for by Marcel Veldhoven, poet, adventurer and traveller, this card has many layers and there is always more to see and interpret.
